Day 1: Houston

Lake Houston

The Houston lake is a reservoir is tucked away in the Texas countryside. There is a variety of fish species in the waters, including catfish, bass, crappie, and many more. The lake is located on the west fork of the San Jacinto River, 15 miles northeast of downtown Houston.

McGovern Lake

Head to the middle of Houston and cast a line for a special urban fishing experience. There are a variety of species to hook, but the slice of urban paradise is enough to have anglers packing up the gear for some time on the water here. Daily hours are 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. It is located in Hermann Park, which is open daily 6 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Sheldon Lake State Park

Another tranquil setting amongst urban hustle and bustle. You’ll look forward to catching bass, bluegill, catfish, and more in the park’s well-stocked fishing ponds and calm atmosphere. Daily hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The park is located at 14140 Garrett Road in Houston.

Tom Bass Park

Head to the Pearland area of town for yet another urban fishing experience. The park is split into three areas, and each area has its own pond with bank access. Section III boasts a fishing pier as well. Expect to pull in catfish, rainbow trout, and more, depending on where you drop your line. The park is open daily 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. and is located at 15108 Cullen Blvd in Houston.

Day 2: Galveston

Galveston Bay

If you want to fish in the best location in the state of Texas, pack up your gear and head here. You’ll have the opportunity to hook flounder, redfish, speckled trout, and many more. Pause for a moment from the day’s task to enjoy the surrounding area. Relax on the beach, enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, or do some souvenir shopping. Hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The address is 523 24th Street in Galveston.

Galveston’s 61st Street Fishing Pier

The Galveston pier offers anglers the classic Gulf Coast fishing experience they’re looking for. The pier reaches out into some of the deeper waters of the Gulf. You’ll find yourself reeling in redfish, speckled trout, sheepshead, drum, and more. The pier is open 24 hours a day. The pier is located at 6101 Seawall Blvd in Galveston.

Like Galveston Bay, it’s a must-visit location for the serious angler interested in coastal fishing. You’ll have an unforgettable Gulf fishing experience, all while taking in breathtaking views. You’ll likely find redfish, speckled trout, and others on the hook. The pier is open 24 hours a day. Set your GPS to 9001 Seawall Blvd in Galveston.

Day 3: Other Locales

There are a variety of other fishing locales that are less than a two-hour drive from Houston. The following towns are all just a little over an hour from one another, meaning ambitious anglers could hit each lake in a single day!

Anahuac

Anahuac is about an hour’s drive and hosts the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, as well as Double Bayou Park. Both are ripe with an array of fish species, as well as a diverse population of bird species to highlight your trip.

Conroe

Head to the heart of Texas in Conroe for lake fishing like no other. The 21,000-acre Lake Conroe is home to bass, catfish, crappie, and more. You can cast a line from a fishing pier or a boat and enjoy beautiful landscape while you wait to hook your next big fish story.
