Get ready for an incredible vacation getaway by booking a Memorial Day Weekend with us in Austin. We are the gem of the Southwest in a city full of life and fun. You can find all kinds of summer activities for Memorial Day here too. Take a look at how you can spend Memorial Day in Austin with us:

Spend the Day at the Lake

Austin is perfectly situated in between several different lakes in the area. You will find that getting to lakes such as Lake Travis, Lady Bird Lake, and Lake Austin is incredibly easy, especially when you stay at one of our vacation rentals. These lakes are conveniently located in and around Austin. Spending the day at the lake is the perfect way to cool off as the sun is shining high overhead. In addition to swimming at these lakes, you can also navigate your way around. Stop by one of the many rental shops at the lakes to get a hold of a kayak, canoe, or paddle board so you can cruise around. Each lake offers beautiful shorelines that are worth exploring. Rental shops that you can stop by include Float on Boat Rentals, Live Love Paddle, and Greenbelt Outdoors to name a few. If you prefer to have someone take you around the lake instead, you can always book a boat cruise on Lady Bird Lake with Capital Cruises or Lone Star Riverboat. These boat cruises offer a scenic boat ride that typically takes you past the cityscape and see beautiful Austin landmarks. Hanging out at the lake has never sounded so good!

Go Tubing

Another great way to beat the heat is by heading to Hill Country and enjoying the rivers for some river tubing. Float your way down the San Marcos River which always flows at its best just after spring. Stop by Texas State Tubes to grab your floatation devices and enjoy a relaxing time down the river. You can also head further out of town to the Comal River or Guadalupe River to beat the crowds too.

Enjoy Some Live Music

Austin is known as the live music capital of the Southwest for good reason. You will find that downtown Austin features a variety of music venues that offer thrilling performances. Throughout the year you will find big-name artists performing incredible shows. Do not miss out on the opportunity to stop by popular music halls here in Austin that include Emo’s Austin and Moody Amphitheatre. These venues often host a variety of events in between musical performances so you can always find something going on at them!

Watch the Bats at Congress Ave

One of the many unique things that Austin is known for is the colony of bats that live beneath South Congress Avenue. Each summer the bats are awake for the season and take off at dusk every night. Millions of bats will fly out into the skyline, making for a really cool and unique experience. While the bats call South Congress Ave home from March through November it is the summer months that are the best time to see their takeoff at dusk. There will be close to 1.5 million bats by the end of every summer season. There are a few areas that make for the best viewing spots for the bats. Head over to the Congress Bridge or relax at the Hike and Bike Trail. Don’t watch too close to the bridge or you may risk having bat droppings come down!

Enjoy the Local Eats

Enjoying the local food scene is a must-do for any city that you visit. Austin features a variety of incredible restaurants here in the city. Stop by Habana, located in South Austin, for their famous handmade empanadas. Their menu also includes favorites such as delicious Cuban sandwiches and seafood paella. Perla’s Seafood and Oyster Bar is an incredible fine dining restaurant that offers a beach vibe and patio. Juliet Italian Kitchen offers incredible cocktails along with tasty Italian cuisine. If you are in the mood for late-night drinks simply head over to Rainey Street. You will find a variety of bars and nightclubs that will make for the perfect evening outing.

Memorial Day in Austin

Why is it that upon unpacking and settling into our vacation abodes, the first words out of our mouths are always “What’s for dinner?” Fortunately for our guests, Austin is a foodie paradise and even though our fully equipped kitchens are anxiously awaiting use, your first night of the long weekend will be better spent enjoying a taste of the town! The unofficial meal of the Memorial Day in Austin holiday is, of course, barbecue, and our town is home to some of the best barbecue joints in the nation! For your first night in town, we recommend a traditional taste of Austin, with a visit to Sam’s Barbecue. Located at 2000 E 12th Street, this barbecue joint is destined to become your newest obsession, unless you are seeking white tablecloths, snooty wait staff, and prices so high you wonder if you will need to take out a loan, that is! Sam’s has been a local tradition since the namesake himself opened its doors all the way back in 1957 and today this simple establishment offers no pretensions or frills. The barbecue is fresh, juicy, and so tender, you will soon understand the words hand-painted on the front of the inauspicious cottage that offers such flavor, informing guests that no teeth are needed to enjoy their meats!

Hot Luck Festival, May 26th Through 29th

A holiday weekend without some sort of special festival is a sad one indeed, one that you won’t even have to contemplate during your Austin getaway as you celebrate at the Hot Luck Festival, held in various places throughout town. Offering live music and hot food, a huge selection of chefs are all gathered together to give you more of what you are craving in the form of a barbecue competition that rewards all that participate with deliciously prepared meats! Make Memorial Day in Austin 2022 the holiday of charred meat as you explore this incredible festival and listen to live music performed by musicians destined to become your new favorites! For all you kids of the 80s and the 90s, you may be excited to hear that DJ Jazzy Jeff is scheduled to perform!

The Reason for Memorial Day in Austin

Generally, we tend to think of Memorial Day as the kickoff to summer adventures, but the underlying reason for this holiday has not been forgotten in Austin. Paying homage to heroes past and present, heroes that have sacrificed everything so we can continue to enjoy the freedoms our beautiful nation provides, is an important part of the celebration and one that can be experienced during your stay. The Memorial Day Service in Lakeway, held in nearby Lakeway, Texas at Emmaus Catholic Church 1718 Lohmans Crossing Road offers a color guard ceremony and the presentation of the Memorial Day Wreath in between speeches made by keynote speakers. Held on May 30th and starting at 10 AM, this ceremony is a beautiful one as is the Annual Memorial Day Celebration held at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home & Cemetery 14501 N Interstate Hwy 35 in nearby Pflugerville. This ceremony will take place in the Veterans section of the cemetery and promises to be emotionally fulfilling for all who attend. Both towns are located less than 25 miles away from your Renters Club sanctuary and feature many of the small town amenities that make Texas great!
