Travelers near and far flock to the warmer weather of places like Texas throughout the year, many opting to spend their Christmas break somewhere warm. Once you’ve settled on Texas for your Christmas respite, point your compass to Houston. There are plenty of things to do and see during Christmas in Houston that will keep you as busy as you like during your stay, whether you spend your time indoors or out.
Green Mountain Energy Ice
The rink, located at Discovery Green in downtown Houston, is open mid-November through the holidays. Kinder Lake’s model boat basin is transformed into the venue each winter, including Christmas and into the New Year. The rink stays cold with equipment powered by renewable energy sources, and the border of the rink is made from recycled plastic materials, making the rink as “green” as its providers. Hours vary, and you can find a complete list of hours, dates, special events and pricing, and ticket sales online.
TXU Energy is once again presenting Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo. The beautiful zoo grounds are lit up with the sights, colors, and sounds of the holiday season. Wander through traditional displays like Holiday Grove, “Illuminated Ocean” – featuring glowing jellyfish and undersea creatures, and get your picture taken with Santa. New in 2022, you’ll see many more life-size animal lanterns throughout the zoo, a new holiday light tunnel, and an interactive dance floor at the Children’s Zoo plaza. You can see these Houston winter activities from November 18, 2022-January 8, 2023.
Space Center Houston
Light from the stars in the sky indicate galaxies we can only dream of reaching one day. Enjoy lights a little closer to Earth this holiday season with the center’s “Galaxy Lights” display. Combine the visit with a visit to the center, which features an array of permanent and rotating exhibits, including interactive exhibits. Combo tickets start at 3 p.m. and include admission to the center as well as a walk through the lights. For the most enjoyment of the lights, plan about 90 minutes. The display is open 6-10 p.m. daily, but ticket sales end at 9 p.m. The display runs November 12- to January 1. Special closures include November 24, December 8, 24, and 25th.

Burke Baker Planetarium
Located at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the planetarium offers a variety of shows and experiences. Squeeze in some learning this Christmas with presentations about black holes, get your “Passport to the Universe,” or ride the “Starry Night Express,” among others. The planetarium hosts shows for the general public, as well as school groups and other special occasions.
Lone Star Flight Museum
Come see some of the most unique, as well as historic aircraft to fly the skies over the U.S. and around the world. See permanent displays of planes like the Beecraft Honey Bee – a high-wing cantilever monoplane made of all-metal. The historic plane never made it to production, and the prototype at the museum is the only one in existence. You can also zee the Boeing PT-17 Stearman, the primary trainer flown by the U.S. and other Allied nations during World War II. There were over 8,000 of the open-cockpit biplanes produced from 1934-45. You can also learn about the science and history of flight with hands-on exhibits. If you’re brave like the pilots who took to the sky, you can go up in one of the historic Warbirds this Christmas.

Houston is home to several breweries and distilleries. Grab something to eat and wash it down with brews from companies like Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Karbach Brewing, Spindeltap Brewery, and many more. You may even be able to buy some to bring back to your rental to enjoy with a holiday meal.
