Christmas in San Antonio

Travelers near and far flock to the warmer weather of places like Texas throughout the year, many opting to spend their Christmas break somewhere warm. Once you’ve settled on Texas for your Christmas respite, point your compass to San Antonio. There are plenty of things to do and see that will keep you as busy as you like during your Christmas in San Antonio stay, whether you spend your time indoors or out.

Zoo Lights

While it may be “lights out” for many of the zoo’s residents, the grounds are flooded with light and holiday cheer for you to enjoy. The stars of the show are the bright, 32-foot-tall LED trees. Take a trip around the zoo on the Holiday Sing-Along Express train. You’ll see life-size illuminated animals, including a 15-foot-tall giraffe in the “Starry Safari” themed area of the zoo. Roast marshmallows, sip hot cocoa, and admire the glow of lights through a light tunnel. Make sure to stop by the Lakeside Light Show – a pixel technology show combined with a custom Christmas and Latin song soundtrack.

San Antonio River Walk

Stroll, shop, or dine along the winding path that hugs the San Antonio River. There are vintage and historical sites dotted along the way, as well as new attractions, modern boutiques, and more. The 15-mile path of the River Walk is the largest urban ecosystem in the U.S. Float down the river on a special narrated tour that hits all the highlights. Make sure to take in the holiday light show along the river, complete with millions of twinkling lights from the day after Thanksgiving through the first weekend of January.

The Alamo

“Remember the Alamo!” Add some history to your festivities. The 1836 battle at the Spanish mission is what many know the historic site for. Built in 1731 and originally called Mission San Antonio de Valero, it is the first of five missions the Spanish built while trying to solidify their claim to Texas. It eventually became a frontier military outpost for Spain, Mexico, Texas, and the U.S. Take a guided tour, study the exhibits, or enjoy hands-on demonstrations about life in the 1830s. The hour-long tours are daily at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 a.m., and 1 and 3 p.m. Children 12 and under are $30 and adults are $40. There is a discount for Friends of the Alamo members, military, and their family.

Mission Trail

Begin at the famed Alamo and follow the winding pedestrian route along the San Antonio River, passing the four other historical missions. The San Antonio Missions National Historic Park houses the trail, and each mission in the park boasts its own unique visitor areas. Each location is 2-3 miles away from the nearest neighbor, so you’ll get a workout, followed by a rest as you explore the area around each mission. Make sure to check out the Spanish colonial demonstration farm at Mission San Juan, and the official park visitor center at Mission San Jose.
