Winter in Houston Guide

Travelers near and far flock to the warmer weather of places like Texas throughout the year, and especially in winter. Once you’ve settled on Texas for your winter respite, point your compass to Houston. There are plenty of things to do and see that will keep you as busy as you like during your Winter in Houson, whether you spend your time indoors or out.

Green Mountain Energy Ice

The rink, located at Discovery Green in downtown Houston, is open mid-November through the holidays. Kinder Lake’s model boat basin is transformed into the venue each winter. The rink stays cold with equipment powered by renewable energy sources, and the border of the rink is made from recycled plastic materials, making the rink as “green” as its providers. Hours vary, and you can find a complete list of hours, dates, special events and pricing, and ticket sales online.

Zoo Lights

TXU Energy once again presents Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo. The beautiful zoo grounds are lit up with the sights, colors, and sounds of the holiday season. Wander through traditional displays like Holiday Grove, “Illuminated Ocean” – featuring glowing jellyfish and undersea creatures, and get your picture taken with Santa. New in 2022, you’ll see many more life-size animal lanterns throughout the zoo, a new holiday light tunnel, and an interactive dance floor at the Children’s Zoo plaza.

Space Center Houston

“Houston, we have a problem,” is a slightly misquoted saying that originally relates to difficulties during the 1970 Apollo 13 spaceflight. You can learn what was really said, and more about the mission and many others NASA completed at Space Center Houston this winter. There is an array of permanent and rotating exhibits, including interactive exhibits and Houston winter activities. Download the app and reserve a seat on the NASA Tram Tour, to get a tour of the whole facility before deciding where you want to spend more time. Tickets are available at spacecenter.org and hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Check the website for special events, including the Christmas-themed “Galaxy Lights” featuring thousands of light displays in and around the facility.

The Escape Game Houston

In the last several years, escape rooms have become a popular activity, rain or shine. Work together with your group members to solve a series of clues and puzzles and break out in 60 minutes to win the game. There are different themed rooms to choose from, with varying degrees of difficulty. Choose the topic or difficulty that’s right for you and make sure to book in advance. Book your time at one of two Houston-area locations, as well as your choice of room including Timeliner: Train Through Time, The Heist, Playground, Special Ops: Mysterious Market, and many others.

Burke Baker Planetarium

Located at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the planetarium offers a variety of shows and experiences. Learn about black holes, get your “Passport to the Universe,” or ride the “Starry Night Express,” among others. The planetarium hosts shows for the general public, as well as school groups and other special occasions during winter in Houston.

Lone Star Flight Museum

Come see some of the most unique, as well as historic aircraft to fly the skies over the U.S. and around the world. See permanent displays of planes like the Beecraft Honey Bee – a high-wing cantilever monoplane made of all-metal. The plane never made it to production, and the prototype at the museum is the only one in existence. You can also zee the Boeing PT-17 Stearman, the primary trainer flown by the U.S. and other Allied nations during World War II. There were over 8,000 of the open-cockpit biplanes produced from 1934 to 45. You can also learn about the science and history of flight with hands-on exhibits. If you’re brave, you can go up in one of the historic Warbirds.

Breweries & Distilleries

Houston is home to several breweries and distilleries. Grab something to eat and wash it down with brews from companies like Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Karbach Brewing, Spindeltap Brewery, and many more.
